The current impacts of the information and communication revolution on the city:

Contemporary Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), Increasingly integrated in everyday objects and urban spaces, are arguably the most distributed technologies ever: they are ubiquitous and affect each citizen directly and personally.
As such, the ability to predict ICT’s impact on citizen’s spatial use patterns, and as a result the changes in urban form and function, is a difficult task .
The difficulty of predicting human behavior in built environments is well known in both architecture and urban design. Environmental psychologists like Lynch, Canter, Barker and others have researched it for the past 50 years.
The integration of ICT in cities further amplifies the complexity of this task, because it affects each one of the three main characteristics of cities: their form(skyline ), their function(zoning regulations), and their use(economy, culture and everyday life).

Form: describes the physical properties of an environment, including its size, shape, position in space, and the materials it is made of.
Function: indicates the semantic properties of an entity. It adds meaning to the entity, in relation to a specific context.
Use: is a property that adds time-based, socio-cultural information to the represented object.
