Lecture 2 , 3 : Design and architectural design : Design Definition , Meaning and purpose of design ,
Hierarchy of human needs , The Concerns of design , Design problem dimensions: Need , Context , Form , Architectural design , Design constrains , Principles of “Good” Design .

1- Design Definition:

-A goal-directed problem-solving activity
-Simulating what we want to make (or do) before we make (or do) it as many times as may be necessary to feel confident in the final result
-Engineering design is the use of scientific principles, technical information and imagination in the definition of a mechanical structure, machine or system to perform prespecified functions with the maximum of economy and efficiency
-Relating product with situation to give satisfaction
-The imaginative jump from present facts to future possibilities
-A creative activity - it involves bringing into being something new and useful that has not existed previously .

2- Meaning and purpose of design
Design means both the verb designing and the noun as production
The word (design) in a dictionary is defined as follows:
To draw, to form a plan, to intend a plan or scheme in mind, a mental plan
The last two definitions are the most important because of the word (mental) which means concerning with the mind, so you have to think , analysis and deduct in order to design .
You cannot design without thinking, if we analyze these terminologies, we will be able to know that design is a (conscious mental act).
When we have a mental awareness of what is involved, then we are able to solve a design problem, the very act of designing needs a conscious awareness of the problem, then we must devote on our part of conscious mental effort to format a design idea which solves a certain need.
Therefore if we are not able to think or analyze all different aspects of the problem involved with our design, we will not be able to come up with satisfactory design. Thus, we can find satisfactory solution for problem if we think, analyze and deduct.
